Caring for your Porsche 911

Car covers are an integral part of ensuring that your Porsche 911 stays in tip top condition - but caring for your pride and joy should go much further than that, as those conscientious owners will know all too well.

The proper upkeep of a 911 should be the owner’s passion, taking up every spare minute that they can devote to maintaining the body, engine and chassis of the car. Neglect of a 911 can lead to frightening consequences in terms of the deterioration in a car’s condition and the depreciation in its value.

Fortunately, the range of products available to care for your 911 is more extensive and advanced than ever before, and the level of knowledge and expertise that exists is growing all the time. Here are some tips for keeping your 911’s exterior in good nick.

Car protection
Keep your garage well stocked up with top-of-the-range products like paint-and-wheel sealant and tyre gloss. A good quality, professional sealant will protect your 911 from dirt and small scratches, while gloss will refresh your tyres and keep them looking new. When treating paintwork, be sure to use a high quality, ultra soft applicator.

Damage avoidance
Cheap car insurance for 911s can be hard to find but you can reduce your premiums and prolong the life of your paintwork by keeping your car out of harm’s way, away from roads and passing traffic. An alarming number of 911 damage claims are made after passing pedestrians or motorists inadvertently bump into a parked Porsche. Your insurance company will reward you for finding a safer spot for your car – and your 911 will thank you too!

Washing your 911
Premium quality car shampoos and waxes should be at the very heart of your 911 maintenance regime. Make sure your car shampoo is wax car-friendly in order to avoid removing those layers of wax laid down using hours and hours of good old-fashioned elbow grease! When choosing a shampoo, look out for phrases like ‘high-sudsing’, which indicates the shampoo will lift dirt away from the paintwork, and ‘pH-neutral’, which ensures there is no danger of an adverse chemical reaction between shampoo and paintwork.

911 owners are strongly advised to buy a Grit Guard to aid with washing their vehicle. Washing mittscan easily become contaminated with dirt and grit during the washing process, which can soon find its way into the paintwork of the vehicle. But rubbing the mitt against a Grit Guard after each dip in the bucket releases the particles of dirt and keeps the paintwork safe.

Choose a thick pile wash mitt made of natural materials. Lamb’s wool is preferable to synthetic sponge, as it retains more water and is softer than man-made products.

Finish your wash correctly with a professional wax and buff, then cover that car up!
